Grad Student, paid internship, TN vs J1

Post Mon Mar 28, 2011 4:23 pm

Hi

I'm currently a graduate student and have accepted an offer for a paid 3 month internship in the USA. Its a photonics job, and my bachelors degree is in physics, so I figure I qualify under physicist. But has anyone got a TN visa as a graduate student? I'm worried about this job definition bit, if they don't consider me a 'professional' because I'm a student.

I've also looked into the J1 visa, but the internship is not at a university, and I'm taking a leave from my studies here for the 3 months. So the J1 doesn't seem like it fits, and it looks to be more expensive.

Any comments on this would be appreciated

Thanks

Do you have a degree that qualifies you as a physicist?

Are you taking a job that is that of a physicist?

If you answered yes to both of these questions, you will get a TN, but either category would work.

J1 is the way to go - people do it all the time. You won't need a TN for a three month paid internship.
