Green card holder visiting the US

Post Sun Dec 18, 2011 4:03 pm

Good evening everyone,

Sorry if this has been asked before... but I'm pretty confused, and I sure would appreciate you guys helping me out.

I'm a Canadian citizen (born and raised in Canada). When I turned 13, my parents and I moved to Dallas, Texas, my dad was given a work visa, not sure what letter visa (B,H,TN etc)... Six years later, we all received green cards, I was 19 at the time, and already attending university. I have since graduated, and upon my graduation, I came back to Canada.. I was supposed to only come here for the summer to hang out with old friends, but I got a job offer and never went back to the States.

Now I'm 24 - I have a job, bought a house - the whole nine yards, here in Canada.

I would like to go for two weeks to Miami on group vacation in January. Is there anything I should be aware of when I get to the airport? I'm still in possession of my valid green card, and my old TX driver's license / I also have an Ontario one now (both are valid). There's 18 of us going, and I don't wanna get left behind.

Thank you very much for all your help,
Scott

One of the requirements to hold a green card is to maintain your permanent residence in the US. Staying outside the US for a year or more is seen as abandonment of your green card. You will more than likely face abandonment issues if questioned at the border. You should have obtained a re-entry permit to preserve your green card.
