Has anyone bought real estate in Mexico?

Post Mon May 22, 2006 1:03 pm

Hello Everyone!

I am a Canadian living in Mexico with my family and I am looking for stories for a new book I am writing on foreigners buying real estate in Mexico. If anyone has done so, I would really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks.

I haven't personally, but out of curiosity - Isn't there some law that prevents foreigners from actually owning property in Mexico?

You can buy it, but somehow it's still not exactly yours type of thing. I think I read that somewhere and thought it was interesting.

Owning Mexican real estate

That is actually a very good question. Yes, it was true that foreigners could not own coastal real estate in Mexico about 30 years ago. Fortunately, that has all changed and many foreigners are thrilled to be buying many different kinds of Mexican real estate for businesses, personal use and rental
purposes. You hold your property in a bank trust called a Fideicomiso which makes it extremely safe for a foreigner to now own real estate here.

I know the system well as my husband and I own 2 pieces of property in the Mayan Riviera. Many people have questions on how to do it, which is why I am currently writing a book on it. Keep the questions coming.

How about Panama? I know Panama is not Mexico and the laws are not the same, nevertheless does anyone have any information about purchasing a coastal property in Panama?
