Once we knew that my girlfriend had become pregnant - planned of course - we began looking for doctors. Our medical coverage wasn't going to cover the delivery or doctor visits as we're in the first year of a contract (unfortunate stipulation) and finding a medic we could trust took a bit of time. Finding a hospital was another tricky area.
We eventually settled on an OBGYN based out of Hospital Angeles Mocel and were fairly happy with her. Visits were only 200 pesos and various lab tests and ultrasounds cost between 250 and 1800 pesos each round.
We eventually had to switch doctors when we decided upon the Hospital Santa Teresa in Lomas Virreyes for the delivery - our initial doctor wasn't registered there. Santa Teresa is marvelous! The only hospital that met our desires across the board. We wanted the baby to be with us in the hospital room 24/7 (no nursery time apart from the absolutely necessary), 100% breatsfeeding and no bottle formula, and the ability for the father - me of course - to stay with mommy all the time. You'd be surprised how hard it is in Mexico to find hospitals that meet that criteria. Most wouldn't allow the father to stay overnight and all save for Santa Teresa insisted on feeding the infants formula.
Santa Teresa is known as a hospital dedicated to womens' needs and it absolutely is. Very small and previously run by nuns, the facilities are peaceful and staff are incredibly attentive. My mother had come for a visit prior to the birth and was impressed with the facilities and staff (she works in an Ottawa obstentrics clinic).
Sorry if this is starting to sound like an ad for Santa Teresa!
Anyway, it was remarkably easy to have a baby in Mexico. I thought it would be harder and while we still have paperwork to complete with IMSS and the Canadian embassy, and vaccinations to have done, everything is going smoothly.
Our baby was born on June 19th, 2009 and is a very healthy and beautiful baby girl.
