Having a really hard time adjusting r/o

Post Wed Sep 21, 2005 2:48 am

Hi! I just moved to London from Vancouver, BC to attend school for one year. I arrived 6 days today and have been having a really hard time. I feel major anxiety and I'm so homesick, I've spent so much money calling home already. I find that it's worst in the evenings as I get incredibly sad and depressed. I am hoping this will go away soon :( Does anyone have any tips for getting over this quickly? I am starting school on Monday and don't want to feel so distracted and sad.

School will probably help to keep your mind off of things! Don't worry, you'll slowly start to settle in meeting new friends and so on. Keep yourself busy, that's the best way.

Hang in there!

If you get a phone card from the post office, sometimes you get a deal where you can call Canada free after 6pm UK time. That should help on the money front.

As for the adjusting. I've been here since November and I haven't fully adjusted. I am not sure I ever will. It doesn't help that I am flying BACK to Toronto for my third time since July in December.

In your case, just think of it as an adventure. Your time here has an end date, so you know you are not stuck somewhere you do not want to be. Just relax and have an awesome time. And avoid the tube in rush hour because that can turn you off of London quickly!

i came here as a student last year as well, and the good news is that it does get easier, and being busy with school and making friends will make a huge difference!!! and london does have a few things that will make you feel a little less homesick like the maple leaf pub and the canada store in covent garden. but otherwise think of it as an adventure, and do all the fun british things that you can while you're here...just think of all the stories you'll have to tell when you go back!

Isn't the problem that when we go to a new country, we take everything personally? For example, if you meet a rude and grumpy waiter, or salesperson, we tend to think that means everyone in the country is nasty. But if we met such a person at home, we'd know it was just them, and they may be having a bad day.

Also give yourself time. Canada and the UK are not at all alike, despite what some may say. It's OK to feel alientated!
