Personally its the DVLA adds I don't like. The whole one that they can find if you're a tax xheat just by the click of a mouse...creepy eh?!

interesting reading about everyone's impressions, especially the ones noting the british "reserve" and "negative national identity"-thing, since many would actually describe these traits as VERY canadian, probably more so, really.

I think I'd agree with Wanderlust on that one from my own experiences. In the main, I've found the British less reserved than Canadians. Maybe not as outwardly friendly, which is a different thing, but definitely less reserved.

It's true that people in the UK are forever moaning about how things are in the country, but that's a national characteristic, and doesn't necessarily mean they have a negative national identity.

I think some British people are reserved. They tend to have either 2 modes- they're either extreamly reserved stiff upperlip or they're wanting to hug you yelling "owright mayte- ow's it go en ven!" I find both modes make me unfortable.I miss that about Canada, a nice handshake and a "how do you do?" Very nice really its sociable but not too socialble.

Where do you live?
Oxford

Where are you from originally?
Leeburn, ON (near Sault Ste. Marie) then Waterloo, ON

Why are you in the UK?
Have always wanted to travel abroad, so when offered a job transfer at the age of 22, I jumped at it!

What do you like/hate about the UK?
Like many others, I love the greeness, the history and culture, and the abundancy of public transport. I also love the "sociable culture", if that makes any sense? I like BBC programming! I like the sense of humour. I love the close proximity to the rest of the world and the "open culture" - I've learned SO much about other cultures since moving here!

I hate the feeling of not being able to go out and lose sight of a person (or evidence of a person) for miles. I miss seeing ALL the stars (grew up in Northern Ontario where there aren't any city lights to drown out anything). I hate that there isn't a Tim Horton's, as many of you have also cited. My Mom laughed when I told her I missed Timmy's! I miss the Great Lakes! I miss Canadian beer. I miss Canadian comedy. I miss proper summer weather and temps. Smile I miss the open fields of farmland. I miss the bush!

Both countries are great, but the high cost of living here is making me head home. That and I really do miss Canada now. Again, like other's have said, I didn't realise how much I loved Canada and being Canadian until I moved here.

I'm brand new on the board... and I was happy to find it! Sorry to hear that it's kind of slow...

Anyhow...
Where do you live?
Currently Calgary... but will be on my way to Aberdeen in December. I hear it's a lovely time of year to go.... Wink

Originally From?
Toronto, technically. Parent's moved to Alta when I was 2. Spent time in both Edmonton and Calgary.

Why UK?
I've accepted a transfer with BP. Coming to Aberdeen to help develop a new oil field in the North Sea.

I'm really looking forward to the move... it's great time for hubby and I to have an adventure. Anyone else here living in Aberdeen?? I've been over there a couple of times, but I could use PLENTY of advice on where to live, shop, play... I asked a friend of mine there where to buy to clothes.. he said "Edinburgh". Laughing

Hi Sara!
Aberdeen eh? That will be exciting. I don't know much about the area as I am down in Stirling though I'm pretty sure that there must be some clothes in Edinburgh, it's too cold to be naked up there! Wink
I just wanted to say good luck on your move to Scotland, I am sure you'll enjoy your time here. There seems to be tons of North Americans working for BP here.

Had to join in on this one!!!

where am I currently?

Edinburgh, Scotland

Where was I from originally?

Born in Ottawa then moved to the west coast.. have lived in and around Vancouver for most of my life.

why am I here?

Don't know, I really was bored with my life at home... no real direction and I'd always wanted to travel. Spent three months in London and then got a transfer to Edinburgh!

what do I like about the UK?

Places being open late to get a bite to eat when you've got the munchies from a night out, also grocery stores!!! I like the way i feel proud of Edinburgh when people say they love the city, I feel like its part of me now! I especially notice it when i've been away... I come back and feel the way i did the first time I came here. I like Kilts, and scottish accents (still... I hope i never lose the love of the accent!) I like the fact that you can drive/train/bus a couple of hours and be in a place that is so much different from where you started out - with a different accent too! I like the BBC, I must admit!!! I like the fact that there is a new low cost airline flying to Canada!!! And I like being so close to so many amazing holiday destinations, a 2 hour flight and you're in the sunshine!! I also love that i have a Tim Horton's coffee machine here so I can have timmy's every day! I also love being mistaken for being Irish... have really picked up the accent!

I hate... the roads in Edinburgh... I don't like that I have to pay into NI and the Inland revenue and if I got sacked tomorrow I wouldn't be able to collect any sort of compensation (even though I would never collect, I'd work at McD's first!) I don't like the cold wind we get here, although in saying that I never loved the oppressive heat at home either... I hate that i would never be able to afford a house and therefore will have to move back to Canada to get ahead...

In regards to being called American, I agree with a previous post, a lot of people will ask me if I'm Canadian, especially men, because they know that they'll get a smack if they ask if we're american!

Sorry, this has been a bit long winded.... great board to find to chat to fellow Canadians.... I'm going to be in Vancouver in one week, yippeeee!!!
