Health Care

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

Health Care

Post Sun Sep 12, 2010 8:25 am

Hi all,

Does anyone know what happens with health care benefits after you relocate to a different country? Do we loose them temporarily/permanently? Can we apply for them once we return to Canada? Can anyone explain? Does it depend on a province? I lived in Quebec before moving to the US.

I couldn't find any information online..

Thanks.

There are specific rules that you must be aware of. If you have left your province for more than a set number of consecutive days without returning, you must reapply I believe. Check the OHIP website and then follow any relevant links.

I know that you are not from Ontario, but it will help you to get started.

OHIP is for Ontario.

Once you moved from QC, your RAMQ account became invalid. RAMQ does not generally allow (unlike OHIP) long-term non-residents to maintain eligibility. RAMQ does allow (again, unlike OHIP) returning citizens immediate coverage when residence is re-established.
