health coverage pre-3month kick in???

hi there,

i am starting work in the states and my company offers what appears to be a quite good health plan. the kicker is it only kicks in after 3 months of work. so, what do i do in the meantime to be covered before that 3 months is up??? do i buy travelers insurance??

You would need local medical insurance. You are no longer a traveller if you live in US.

there are some insurance companies that cover immigrants stuck in limbo. just google "immigrants health insurance" you should come up with a few different scenarios.

Call your provinces health plan. It may be possible to continue using it for this time if you buy supplemental travel insurance from a source like BCAA. I didn't think it was, but when I called MSP they said it was possible to do this for up to two years. Of course, MSP will only cover what the services would cost in Canada, which isn't good enough so you must get supplemental. I outlined the situation to BCAA and their was no problem there either, so I just bought a travel policy for the time I wasn't covered (30 days).
