Health Insurance or Travel Insurance for Canadian in UK

Post Tue Dec 07, 2010 8:33 pm

Looking for advice on health insurance or travel insurance that will cover me and ensure that I will have access to emergency medical care and doctors appointments, any treatments required, etc. I am a Canadian moving to the UK and will be applying for my UK Ancestry Visa when I am there. I have a fiance there but can't marry him until my divorce is final in Canada. Thanks so much, any and all advice appreciated! Kimberley P to be

after u have ur ancestry visa, apply for an ehic.

If you are a UK resident, you are entitled to medical treatment that becomes necessary, at reduced cost or sometimes free, when temporarily visiting a European Union (EU) country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. Only treatment provided under the state scheme is covered. However, to obtain treatment you will need to take a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you. Please note: Not all UK residents are covered in Denmark, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.

before this, u'll need to buy some travel insurance while u're in canada because u'll not be eligible for free nhs treatment while in the uk.

When we moved to the UK 5 years ago, I just walked into my nearest GP surgery and registered. I did not have to provide any documentation other than proof of address that I lived in the catchman area, and my VISA that proved I wasn't illegal. I was given an NHS no. entitling me to all care as per a UK resident.
The rules may have changed but in my experience of working for the NHS it is individuals who are here 'illegally' that have to pay for treatment.

Good luck with the move over!

If your intention is to live permanently in the UK you will be exempt from hospital charges from the date of your arrival in the country but you should expect to be asked to prove your intention and that you are legally entitled to live here.

either a uk biometric residence permit or settlement visa is enough to qualify for free nhs treatment, as is a fiancée visa. if u have any of these, a gp can register u as an nhs patient.

I was just in London for 4 days during a european vacation. Caught a nasty chest infection. I went to a local GP, got an appointment (walk in clinic had 5 hr wait), was given a prescription for antibiotics, went to a Boots and paid just over 7 pounds dispensing fee. Never once asked for proof of residency etc. I gave them my aunts address and they put me as a temporary patient. It's pretty great system, and as long as you aren't an illegal you are entitled. Though, they never asked for my home country health insurance info, NHS pays that doctor and pharmacy anyway because I gave a UK address.
