I don't know much about student visas, but you should find all you need right here:
http://www.immi.gov.au/students/index.htm
As far as I know you can work up to 20 hours a week on a student visa.
You'll have to be more specific about the area you want to live in. Queensland is a state, so it's like asking how much for a studio apartment in Ontario. It can vary by quite a bit depending on location.
Here's a site that will give you a better idea.
http://www.realestate.com.au/cgi-bin/rsearch?a=...amp;t=ren&cu=
That link is for finding rentals, but you'll notice there's a tab at the top for finding shared accomadation as well.
Just so you know most colleges are usually called "TAFE's" here. So do a search and you should get more ideas on schools, locations and programs.
If you want to come right away you can always get a working holiday visa if you are under 30. That will allow you to come to Australia for a full year and give you the rights to work while you're here. The only condition is that you can only work for an employer for up to 6 months (no more). You'd also have to leave Australia at the end of the year. I think you can come over on a holiday visa and then apply for a student visa but I can't say for sure.
If you want more advice on how to do all this try posting in the immigration section on this site:

You should get lots of help. There's also a search funtion on there to look through old posts. So if you look up student visas you should get lots of info too.
Good luck.
