Hello from Mexico

Post Mon Jan 29, 2007 3:47 pm

OK so there is a Mexico forum, next time I will look harder before I speak.
Hello my name is Tom from Mississauga Ontario, I have been working / living down here in Tlalnepantla Mexico for the past 4 years, I have been home twice since my big move, once in the winter and once in the summer, boy do I miss the cottage. I still get home sick on rainy days, I miss Swiss Chalet, Canada Day, Labatt's Blue, Harvey's and Tim Horton's. Mexico's super markets have quite a large selection of products found in Canada and the States and growing daily, I'm covered in that department now if they would only open a Tim's on the corner.
I have met a few fellow Canadians around unfortunately not close to home, usually on trip's or vacation in the Republic of Mexico, If your near or far drop me a line,it would be nice to here from you.

Hi Tom,

Welcome to the site!

There are definitely a lot of Canadians who travel to Mexico, and probably a good number that live there too.

What brought you to Mexico? Is it work, or family or just because? :)

Hello From Mexico

Hi Matt,
Let me first say thank you for setting up this nice site, it really helps me feel closer to home.
There are plenty of Canadians living and Vacationing here, I don't however live in a touristic location, I'm living just outside of Mexico City.
I was voluntarily transferred here for work, My wife is a Mexican national so the in in-laws are near. Having family here and a wife who is Mexican really helped out in the transition, this also helped us to get set up in our own place, we are settled in and part of a great community.
I travel The entire Republic of Mexico for work from time to time and have really found my place in a foreign land, Now its time to play catch up with my well traveled wife and see more of this globe, another reason this site is great I can see and plan future trips by reading other expats postings.
Thanks again Matt and good luck in your near and future voyages.

My pleasure, glad you're enjoying the site. We need to get more Canadians in Mexico on here!

Sounds like you're definitely enjoying living in Mexico.

Do you get back to Canada often, or have any plans to move back?

Hey Matt,
I have visited home twice since I moved once
last winter and then again in the summer.
I have no plans to move back full time, I think my next step is to retire on the beach here in Mexico, I still have a long time to go before that can happen.

Thanks Matt for a forum specific to Mexico. I feel like we have really arrived now! I have posted a few times in other sections of this forum but I will reintroduce myself here. I am a Canadian currently living in Playa del Carmen, with my husband and 2 teenage children. We are all Canadian and moved here about 5 1/2 years ago. We lived first for a year in Puerto Vallarta but were told the ocean was nicer and there was more opportunity for entrepreneurial spirits on this coast - so we packed the kids up again and moved to Playa del Carmen site unseen. Yep, life is always an adventure for us! Please let me know if you have questions about living here.

Heya -
You're very welcome! :) Now we just gotta get some more of your expat friends in Mexico chatting here too :)

So many Canadians vacation there - are there many living in Playa del Carmen?

Canadians in Playa del Carmen

Post Tue Feb 27, 2007 8:01 am

Are there many Canadians living in Playa del Carmen? You know that is a great question. Lots of Canadians do holiday here and many have bought condos in Playa - but not many of us live here full time. Most of the Canadian condo owners spend 1-4 months here and then rent it out the rest of the time.

Did you know that according to the Guiness book of world records in 2006 Playa del Carmen was listed as the fastest growing town in the world? We are still growing - they've torn up ALL the roads to improve them! I'll tell you what it is like after the dust settles.

Hello Fritz101!

I hope that you had a good visit.

To answer your question, we own a real estate office in Playa del Carmen. I am also a writer and a life coach but I do that work over the internet or phone so that I am not conducting business in Mexico. Being eligible to work here is probably the hardest part of living in Mexico. You would need a work permit from the government called an FM3. To get it you need a company to sponsor you or you need to show you have the abilities and financial means to start a business. They do not want foreigners taking jobs away from Mexican Nationals (totally understandable)so you need to show you are 'special'. It is probably best to check out options the next time you visit your girlfriend. Hope that helps! Suzanna
