Help! Emergent! I can't drive my car back to Canada!

Post Wed Feb 06, 2008 6:22 pm

I am a Canadian, but my TN visa expired. I leased a U.S car, but I can't drive it back into Canada. The car is in Plattsbough, and I am living in a Hotel. Can anybody give me some advice or help me drive the car back, please!

You have to go through all the import paperwork for the car.

lbhl,

The common story we've heard is that since its a lease vehicle and the title is not in your name, you are not able to import the car into Canada.

But don't let this stop you. All successful people are the ones who keep trying even if others say it can't be done.

So, try and hopefully you'll figure out a way.

ALSO - Keep us posted on your process and let us know if you were successful (on this thread).
Your experience and knowledge will help many Canadians dealing with a similar process.

Hello,

I'm in a simular situation except I have the reverse problem. I am in Ottawa, Canada moving to California and I have a leased car I would love to take with me, but I don't know how to bring a leased car with me.

Are you still having problems? It would have been cool if we could exchange leases?

If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Taking my Car back to canada

Post Sun Jul 13, 2008 6:16 pm

I bought a minivan here in Wisconsin few months back, At that time the client had intention of a three year project. Now with the cost of gas rising and the US economy falling the client has cut down the budget and my project is ending this month.

I have two options Either sell the mini van here at loss and pay for travel or take the min van back with me.

I want to know the import process and what value the mini van will be asses-ed for while paying the duties. It is a 2002 mini van

The title had initially a lien with a financing agency, I paid off and the finance company stamped my title, Is that stamp sufficient or do I have to get a new title.?

Thanks

There is no duty. There are various fees to bring the vehicle into compliance but personal effects are duty (and GST) free. If you're unfortunate enough to be moving to Ontario you might get hit with PST though, as Ontario applies PST to used car sales, not sure how it applies to personal effects.

You declare the vehicle on CBSA Form B4 (together with your other personal effects), and you need a compliance letter from the US manufacturer as it explains at length at www.riv.ca

There is a grace period to have minor changes done, which usually means getting the daytime running lights installed and sometimes having the seat belt anchors re-done. RIV has a deal with Canadian Tire to do this work. Then you can apply for the new title.

If you've got the title it's just a load of bureaucracy you've got to plough through.
