Help! I want to go home!

Post Sun Aug 21, 2005 10:57 am

HI, i need a little bit of advice. In 1985, my mother dragged me across the big pond to come and live with what she thought was the man for her..a wealthy british man. What I need to know...now that i have been here since'85...can I go home anytime i wish to? I have a canadian passport...used to live in sherbrooke Que., my whole family still lives there. I have NOT applied to become a british citizen, but i now have indefinate leave to stay in the UK. Now this is where it gets complicated, I seem to have caught the only worthwhile British woman and we have had kids, 3 in fact. She is fed up with the UK and has heard me talk of home so many times...she wishes to move to canada with me. To sum up, im a 31 canadian male, stranded in the UK, with a British wife and 3 children, how do i get home? Im really lost... please help!

Try looking at the rules for sponsoring family members on the following page:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/sponsor/index.html

It doesn't say on that page whether you have to actually live in Canada to sponsor, but if you look at the "contact us" section, you should be able to find some information about where to ask those kinds of questions. There is also a reasonably detailed and useful section at the beginning of the actually application forms. Just download the .pdf file and have a read. I know that it was slightly confusing for me, as I am technically a resident of Canada sponsoring my common-law boyfriend, but we're currently living in the UK.

Good luck!

I would recommend that you get UK citizenship before you leave. Then make sure that your children have their Canadian passports, then sponsor your wife and get out.
Good luck.

Hey Canukinuk, as Duncan says, get UK citizenship before you come back. And to come back, all you need to do is get across the big pond and be nice to the Customs/Immigration officer. I was out of Canada for 7.5 years and after showing my Canadian passport and answering a the few questions that the officer asked I was on my way. Be thankful that your mother had the brains to at least get you the Canadian passport. (My Mexican ex-wife, is giving me a hard time to do so for our two daughters.)
