Help...looking for job in the US

Post Fri Nov 14, 2008 9:55 pm

Hi Everyone:
I live in Toronto and work as an Executive Assistant for over 15 years. I want to find work in the US (somewhere warm)and it seems impossible. How do you find an employer to sponsor you? I know the market is bad now but I am hoping to leave TO in the Spring. I appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks

Do you have a university degree of any sort?

What are your qualifications of your major? What are your experiences?

Well it would basically be impossible by the spring even if you did qualify, unless you can get TN-1. If you don't qualify for TN-1 it's pretty hard.

If by "executive assistant" you mean the basic sort of secretarial duties and the job doesn't require a degree then you've got no chance, really.

If you want to move somewhere warm, try the Cayman Islands, the only snag with that is that work permits are only valid for six years and that's it.

hi steve:
thanks for the information. Unfortunately I do not have a degree but a diploma. I guess I'm out of luck unless I find an employer in the US to hire me. The only way to do this is find a recruiter and make contact. Gosh, this is so difficult. My career has been turblent and I feel that it's time to make a change. I appreciate your advice.

What Steve is saying is that unless you have a degree, you do not qualify for a TN visa. Regardless if you find an employer to sponsor you, you don't qualify.

Try BC if you're looking for warmer weather. Vancouver Island is the sunniest spot in Canada.

Medicine Hat is the sunniest spot in Canada, Vancouver Island doesn't even come close because of all the rain!

BC is warmer but it's wetter.

The island is less rainy than Vancouver city.

I'm told officially that Calgary has the most sunny days in Canada, but everyone locally seems to agree that Medicine Hat is sunnier because it's a bit further south. I've heard it both ways on the Weather Network.

meh.I read somewhere that it was the Island.

No matter really, I was just pointing out that the weather doesn't suck everywhere in Canada. Just most of it.

I have a friend who moved from the Vancouver Island up to Pond Inlet, Nunavut. They get snow 10 months out of the year.
