Help needed for trip to Paris

Post Mon Feb 19, 2007 5:00 pm

Hi Everyone
I am planning a surpise trip for my wife and I. I have some questions that I hope you can help me with.

1)I need a few options for Paris hotels. I want something close to all the major attractions in a safe neighborhood. Can you give me any suggestions. I dont need anything to fancy. 2 or 3 star is fine. 200-250 cdn a night

2) what is the easiest way to get form the airport ( cdg ) to my hotel?

3) An odd question: If you were to travel to paris/france again what would you change from your last trip?

4) any must see's in France?

Hey there!
I havn't been to Paris yet, but i have a long trip booked for September.

I booked an apartment in the 14th district, for 937euro for 22 days, a one-bedroom with two beds. Chekc into Paris Sweet Home, and agencies like that for furnished apartment rental like i found

1)The first time I went to Paris I rented an apartment in the Latin Quarter, but it was quite expensive. I went again this past March and stayed at the Hotel Campanile Paris X - Gare du Nord. It was 92 euros per night and was lovely because you feel as if you are in a small Parisian neighbourhood (i.e. local bakeries, not too busy, nice views from window). It was a nice hotel with a great continental breakfast. It is close to the Louis-Blanc metro station which makes it easy to get around to all the must-sees in Paris.
2)From CDG I took the metro to my hotel (it's easy and cheap), but make sure you have a metro map because it is very annoying being lost on the metro lugging around your suitcases!
3)I would spend more time there of course! 1 week just isn't enough.
4)Definitely go to Versailles (a short RER ride from Paris). If you are able to visit any other cities, I suggest Carcassonne (a walled medieval city), Avignon (Palais des Papes and Pont St-Benezet), Mont St-Michel (abbey perched on a hilltop island), and Juno Beach in Normandy.

I second the advice to take the RER - However it runs to the Gare Du Nord. From there several metro lines connect, and it is an easy transfer. Make sure you have Euro's with you, as each ticket for the RER from the airport is about 9.00 Euros, and unless you have a credit card with the smart chip on the front, the cards won't work at the automatic ticket machines.

My wife and I have been to Paris a few times over the last few years, and we have stayed several times at the Timhotel St. Georges. It's located about 100 feet from a Metro stop, and it's a direct line from the Gare Du Nord. It's located in Pigalle, which was/is the red light district, but it's very safe, and mostly touristy these days. I think it runs about 120.00 Euros a night (it used to be 80.00, but they recently refurbished the hotel). Beware of any lower priced hotels, as you might not have a private bathroom. The Timhotel IMO is in a great location and is clean and safe.

The hotel is well located, it's steps to the Metro, and Paris is very well connected with the Metro system. Also the Hotel is located at the bottom of the butte of Montmartre, cross the street and climb the hill and just wander the streets. There are great restaurants up the hill, and many are very affordable.

If you wanted to book an appartment, there are also some good deals on smaller apartments. Keep in mind that you're not in Paris to hang out in your room. You just need a place to leave your luggage and sleep. Check out VBRO dot com for a ton of options. My wife and I have book apartments in several cities around the world though there.

As for things to see? I second Versailles as a day trip, however I wouldn't suggest leaving the city. There is more than enough to see and do in Paris, that to travel to the south to a different city would be a bit of a waste. Another don't miss is the Cathedral in St. Denis. Take the metro north to the last stop and St. Denis, and follow the signs. It is the French equivalent to Westminster Abbey, and the artwork/crypts are second to none.

Hi there

Air France Car is also an easy and inexpensive transfer to either Montparnasse or l`Arc de Triomphe from Terminal 2 and 1.

I have also rented apartments for vacation stays in Paris and that is definitely the way to go, but if you prefer a hotel, I normally spend one night on my way back to Canada from Normandy at the Hotel Etats Unis in the Opera district, it is one block from the Roissy coach that takes you directly to all 3 terminals at the airports for 8 euros. It is also close to the Louvre, rue Rivoli, Saint Honore, Place de la Madeleine and les grands magasins on Haussmann. It is very clean, inexpensive and you can`t ask for a better location.

As for what to see, I second that you shouldn't`t leave the city on your first trip, there is more than enough to see, Montmartre, les Marais, the left Bank, Les Invalides, it goes on and on.

Do enjoy, I certainly do every time I`m there.

It has been awhile since I had the good luck to be in Paris, but a few years ago there was a fun restaurant on Ile Saint Louis - I think it was called Le Sergeant or something like that. You ordered a main course from a limited menu and paid accordingly, but you had free access to as much as you wanted from huge bowls of raw vegetables, platters of cold cuts and pâté, breads and cheese. Even the wine was free-flowing - they just plucked bottles of red & white on the tables and kept replacing them. Tables are not individual; you sit at long tables with other people and that way get to meet new people (taking your chance as to whether they are French or other tourists). My apologies if this place is now defunct, but if still open it is an amusing experience. John

Great hotel

The Hotel Astrid on Ave Carnot, Just off the roundabout at the Arc de triomphe is a great little hotel! It is not very expensive, close to bakeries and little pubs. very close to the metro, and in a good afternoon you can walk one block to the Champs Elysees and down to the Place de la Concorde, the Louvre and even Notre Dame. In a slightly different direction you can walk to the Eiffel Tower. I found for location/Price/amenities, this place was fabulous. We stayed here Twice and had a great time.
If you choose to bring a car into the city, there is a 24 hour underground parking location just across the street and up about a half a block too.

Good luck and have a great trip!

Recently i made a trip to Paris. I stayed at De Reuilly Hotel Paris for six nights. I arrived early so they offer us to leave our baggage in very safety store room and we were free for our business.
I ask for the room 10 minutes before check-in time and the room wasn't ready. After few minutes of waiting they decide to upgrade us to better room.
The room was large. Very clean and comfortable.
Every one in the hotel was very friendly. I would defiantly recommend it

I watched video reviews at hotelly.com before my journey .I would suggest all future travelers to visit hotelly.com to watch video reviews of hotels
