Help!

Postby Cwildfire » Thu Aug 03, 2006 10:13 am

Hi everyone! Im a canadian citizen with a working holidaymaker visa looking to stay in the UK. The problem is, Im leaving my job a month before I'm due to go home. So, that rules out a work permit. My mother, brother, and sister live here, but neither of them were born here, so that rules out Right to Adobe. Does anyone know of another visa I could use? Or what I should do?
Thanks!

Where were your parents/ grandparents born? If it was an EU country- you may be able to gain citizenship from that country.

Yeah unfortunately, my mother wasn't born here, and neither were my grandparents. :( I think what I'll have to do is see an immigration solicitor even tho they'll take all my money! :( Im not elegible for anyother visa. :(

It doesn't matter if they were born in the UK. If your parents or grandparents were born in another EU country, you may be eligible for citzienship of that country. I gained Dutch citizenship as my parents were born in Holland. EU citizenship allows me to live and work in the UK without a visa of any sort.

I realise this post was a while ago so may no longer apply but. I see alot of mention about immigration solicitors, has anyone tried using the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) to get help? It's a charitable organisation & they should have offices all across the UK where you can call or walk in to get help at, keep in mind they have short weekday only hours for the most part, so check your local branch's opening hours before hauling everything up there with you.

They helped alot when I was going through a hard time dealing with landlords and rent laws I was unfamiliar with when I first moved over here, I also used their website as a reference to understand my legal obligations & rights regarding employment as I went through an unpleasant experience with the first job I had in this country and I felt I was being taken advantage of & needed to understand employment laws in the UK. Not checked on their site in a while & don't know if they cover immigration questions but its worth a look, their help was invaluable to me in the first year I lived here :)

It could be worth a shot and less expensive. the other avenues I would look into if I were in your situation is to see if either the DWP (Department Work & Pensions) or the UK Visa's websites have any info/help on their sites. I tend to check the FAQ sections once I've navigated to something relatively similar to my situation and quite often find my answers there.

But then, thats just me and I don't have money to throw at lawyers to line their pockets with, so those are the things I would try in your situation & thought I'd mention just in case ;)
