Help! We need a Visa!

Post Fri Sep 21, 2007 12:33 am

Hi - I'm doing this for a friend. She's a little scatty and doesn't think things through quite as much as she should and she's got herself in a bit of a fix. So if anyone can offer any advice I'd (she'd) appreciate it! She's flying to the UK on October 3. She wants to stay in the UK for about a year at her aunt's house. And she wants to work whilst she is there. Unfortunately she has completely overlooked applying for a work visa and has left it far too late to apply for a working holiday visa so now we're a bit stuck? Can she apply for some kind of work permit once she arrives on the UK? I'm English. It's easy for me. She's Canadian.please help her!
Thanks a lot!

How old is she? What kind of skills/ degrees does she have? Is she of EU ancestry?

I don't think there is anything she can apply for when she arrives. If she works, it will be illegal.

Thanks for your reply Lori! She's 22 and her father is Dutch. She's going to the UK before going to college so she hasn't her degree yet. I was wondering if she might be able to apply for something (working holiday visa) before she leaves and then do a re-entry thing when it comes through. Any ideas?

Nope- not a clue what she can do in the few days she has left. Sorry to say, I think she is SOL.

But she may be able to apply for Dutch citizenship (which will take a few weeks depending how ling it takes to get her paperwork together) and then she can stay in teh UK as long as she wants.

Good luck.

Firstly does she has a return flight ticket?
Because if she has only a one way ticket as a tourist she will have some problems ( I think) explaining this to immigration !
And if they ask her how long she is going to be in the UK what will she say ?

If they suspect she is going to the UK longer than she is supposed to and to try to find work they will return her to Canada !

I think the best would be to apply for a working holiday visa ( I think some people get it quite fast) and reschedule her flight because if they refuse her they will put a something in her passport and she will not be allowed in the UK for a while!
It's better to wait and do it the proper way than risking all the problems !

Good Luck !
