hi all

I'm wanting to apply for a British passport but am having problems regarding my fathers status whom has since passed away.

My father was born in India when it was under British rule while his father was serving in the British army there. I have been to the British web site regarding passport eligibility but there doesn't seem to be much information regarding this scenario.

Surely the children of soldiers serving overseas have the same status as those born in the UK.

during WWII my father himself was drafted and spent four years in the armed services before returning to the UK for the first time and lived there for many years.

i know i can apply for an ancestry visa however i have a German girlfriend (most likely future wife) and would like the greater flexibility of the passport. We are both kind of old fashioned so getting married for the sake of a visa or passport is out of the question.

Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

PS: Being told I'm not eligible because my grand father was a career officer in the British army in infuriating.

It is my belief that you ought to be eligible for the ancestry visa as the stipulations appear to include 'british colonies'. You may want to do a little more research on the topic and perhaps contact some of the authorities to help determine your status. It may depend on what is written on your father's birth certificate.

As for your girlfriend's situation I would think that as a member of the EU she ought to be able to move relatively freely between various EU countries. this would include the uk.

Should she indeed require a visa, and does not have ancestry, she'll need to apply for a work permit, or find a company that would like to hire her and sponsor her for a work permit. I don't know what her profession is or what her skills may be but I do know that german / english speakers are in demand in certain professions including customer service and others. It really depends.

I wish I were more familiar with cross border laws between the uk and germany. I apologize.

i do have a few german friends a couple of which I know were sponsored. If I catch up with them I'll ask.

Take care, and try not to get too frustrated just do everything you can to make it work. no one could ask anything more. Smile
