Help with visas/right of abode/citizenship

Post Tue May 01, 2007 6:49 pm

Hello,

I'm leaving very, very shorlty (June 2) for London and my friend intends to come along. However, he doesn't have a workingholidaymaker visa, a UK ancestry visa, or a right of abode certificate even though he is eligible for all of them. He's also eligble to citizenship because his mother was born in the UK and he was born in Canada in 1980.

My 'concern' is (I'm having a mild heart attack) what the best recourse is? Is it possible to apply for a right of abode while already in the UK? Could we fly to Paris for a night and come back thru the airport and have him registered? (as opposed to flying back to Canada and coming back to register - Ryanair to Paris is a lot cheaper) Is applying for citizenship while in the UK really the only option? I'm concerned about how long that may take because he must support himself until the time he'd be registered as a citizen. I'm afraid a work permit isn't an option and there is not enough time to successfully complete even a Working Holiday Maker visa - 4 weeks wait time as of today and he's not going to have his renewed Canadian Passport until May 9th. If anyone in the world could help me I would be incredibly appreciative. Thank You!

I believe there is a certain amount of time that most commonwealth countries citizens are able to go to the UK considered as 'tourists' not sure the length of time, think its a month or two. Don't think it makes that much a difference applying for Visa's whether your in Canada or here in the UK. If your landing in London it may even be easier as the main consulate for Visa's (and most international UK HQ's are based in the London area which is HUGE by the way) or from the Ontario based UK Visa office.

The only hitch may be if your friend is travelling to the UK on a one way ticket, he may get detained in customs & immigrations if thats the case. I would say to your friend to make sure he has copies of his parents birth certificates, his own birth certificate and any other relevant documents (marriage certificates if applicable for his parents and the like) obviously a current passport and proof of Canadian citizenship in case they get picky. Make sure he keeps all copies of these documents on his person (like on a money belt under his t-shirt or something) so that should he get questioned, he is not seperated from the papers proving his identity & rights of abode.

*shrug* dont know if you'll read this in time as June is fast approaching but hope this helps you somewhat :)
I LOVE KD :-D
