High School Grad Moving to UK Temporarily

Post Tue Jan 04, 2005 8:35 pm

Hi, My friend and I are planning to move to the UK for a couple years right after we graduate, which is in 2 years. So, I have no idea what to expect. I don't have much work experience, but how long would it take to find a job that could support me? And where would be the best place to live for a person in my position? And I was also wondering how much I should save up to support me until I got a job. Oh, and one last thing...what kind of jobs are most plentiful in England?
I'd really appreciate any info anyone has

It's nice to see that you are thinking and planning ahead about your trip here to the UK. Alot of it really depends on where you are planning on living and what you expect.

Obviously you are going to have the best chance of work in the major metro areas. If you are looking for work that allows you just to live somewhere vs a career building move than hotel and restaurant work is usally not too difficult to find. If I was you I'd look up some job sites online and see what kinds of things are available with your experience and see what you are in for. You've got two years where you can get some part time work and build experience as well.

I always think it's a good idea to have at least 3-6 months worth of living expenses if possible. I know that seems like a lot but it will certainly make life easier.

Also, don't forget to make sure you have a valid visa or other reason that you are legally able to work here.
Good luck!

Why do you not consider hotel work a career?

I do, I didn't mean it to sound the way you took it.
I spent years working in restaurants and that was/ is a career and I listed that along with hotel work, which I notice you didn't mention in your question, hmmmm maybe I should take offense now ;)

What I meant by that was, if you are looking for casual work than it is easy to find lower level work in a hotel, restaurant, retail shop whatever. That doesn't mean that I think those are lower levels of work but that there are areas that one can start with no experience in those industries.
