hockey player wanting second job/summer job

Postby hockey » Mon Mar 23, 2009 8:44 pm

I currently am playing minor professional hockey in the US. The visa I am on expires July 31st. I will then be back on another visa starting in October for the following hockey season. I have a few questions:

1) Can I get a second job with the Visa I am currently on? If not, can I get another visa in addition to this one so I can work a second job?

2) If neither of these situations is possible I would still like to work from August until October during my offseason in the US. What type of Visa should I try to obtain? If it is a TN visa that I need, is it possible to obtain one without exiting and then re-entering the country.

Thanks for your help.

Depends what category you're currently in, but on P-1 or O-1 the answer is no. You can't have more than one status at a time, if you get another one you give up your current status.

Your employer can file an I-129 to change your status to TN-1, but it's going to be far quicker and maybe cheaper to leave and re-enter. Of course you have to meet the requirements for TN-1, job offer letter, relevant qualifications, fit into a NAFTA job category.
