International Indigenous theatre showcase bound for Perth

Yirra Yaakin Noongar Theatre and the City of Perth are proud to present the 2008 Honouring Theatre Festival from July 1 – 6 in Perth.

The tri-nation theatre festival will showcase quality Indigenous productions from Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

The festival was launched in 2004 to create global pathways for Indigenous theatre companies.

Yirra Yaakin Executive Producer Sam Cook is one of the founders of
Honouring Theatre.

“The festival brings together the best of the best in Indigenous theatre.”

“Perth audiences will be able to experience a quality triple-bill of theatrical works from some of the world’s finest indigenous performers.’ Said Ms Cook.

Yirra Yaakin will present I DON’T WANNA PLAY HOUSE by Tasmanian actress/writer Tammy Anderson.

I DON’T WANNA PLAY HOUSE is a hard-hitting, heart wrenching, but ultimately celebratory one-woman-show. Tammy Anderson relives her tumultuous childhood through a variety of characterizations. IN Tammy’s own words “In the first fifteen years of my life I lived in sixteen houses, 3 caravans and went to 12 schools”

Native Earth Performing Arts from Canada is touring ANNIE MAE’S MOVEMENT by Yvette Nolan.

The play celebrates the amazing life of Mi’qmak activist Annie Mae Pictou Aquash – a woman in a man’s movement, a Canadian in America and an Aboriginal in a white society. It’s been more than thirty years since she was found dead on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota – it’s not clear whether she was killed by the FBi or by members of the American Indian Movement.

Tawata Productions from New Zealand is bringing a Maori musical called RE HEO AROHA by Mira George and Jamie McCaskill.

RE HEO AROHA is a story of love and music. It follows the lives of two young lovers – both seems set on very different directions in life until their undying love brings them together again.

I DON’T WANT TO PLAY HOUSE is being performed in the Yirra Yaakin Theatre, 65 Murray Street Perth.

ANNIE MAE’S MOVEMENT is at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in the Perth Cultural Centre and RE HEO AROHA is being performed at Rechabites Hall in Northbridge.

All shows run for a strictly limited season.

July 1 to July 6.

Tickets available from each venue Yirra Yaakin 08 920 1966 and
PICA – 9228 6300
