Hoping somebody can point me in the right direction...

Post Fri Oct 03, 2008 5:23 pm

I've been skimming through these threads and they are extremely helpful, but I haven't found one dealing with my case yet, hoping somebody can point me in the right direction.

I am working in the television industry in Canada, and am now looking to work in the United States. I don't have a job offer there yet, but would like to get my Visa situation taken care of while I've started applying to jobs, just in case I need to fly there asap. My job (Production Assistant) isn't listed under the NAFTA job titles, so I'm wondering which VISA I need to apply for?

If it helps, I've graduated from school in "Television Broadcasting" and have been working in my field for three years now.

Sorry if this seems redundant, but I appreciate your help.

If you've got a degree and it's not listed under NAFTA, usually you're looking at H-1B. Employers have to sponsor you after the labour certification on I-129. There are only 65,000 people let in under H-1B every year (with some exceptions that don't apply to your situation) and the deadline for applications was the start of this month. Odds of getting approved are about 1 in 3, although with the recession you might have more luck.

There is no way of getting work authorization prior to getting the job, generally speaking the employer has to sponsor you for whatever category it is.
Steve.
