house / residential insurance

Post Fri Mar 27, 2009 4:39 pm

Hi everyone
We are leaving Edmonton for Australia and planning to rent out our house. We have a tax accountant working with us, so all the tax issues are being taken care of.
However, the one thing I am wondering about is our house insurance. Meloche Monnex (TD Insurance) will no longer provide us with insurance, since they don't do non-residents.
Can anyone tell me who they are using for landlord - type insurance for their house, if you are renting out your house in Canada?

How long are you going to be away for? Do you need to declare non-residency? If the move is not permanent, then don't change insurance until you know you're not coming back or living more than 6 months at a time outside of Canada.

We are leaving semi-permanently (at least for 5 years) - Meloche can do it if you will definitely be back within 2 years....
I have found through a broker that ING speciality markets will do it - it's more expensive but at least it's something

Hi! We are about to move from Calgary to Brisbane, and will also be renting out place while we're gone. We actually use TD Meloche Monnex as well. We were not only told that they could no longer cover us for insurance, but they also mentioned that now that we were renting our place out, we had to purchase commercial insurance. Were you told the same thing? Have you found someone to insure your place while you rent it that you would recommend?
