How can a snowbird stay longer in the us

Post Mon Jul 26, 2010 8:53 am

My dad (cdn citizen) currently stays with us for 6months of the year. Is there any exception where he can stay longer and NOT loose any of his canadian benefits (ie medicare CPP, etc)
Thanks

He should get his CPP regardless of where he lives - as long as he paid into it, it's his money. My mother is a Canadian citizen who lives overseas and she gets hers.

As for losing his health coverage, while technically your dad is supposed to be in his home province for their minimum requirements (each province is different) they won't really know when he comes & goes. Assuming he is keeping his Canadian address, nobody will be the wiser.

Your bigger concern should be how can he legally stay in the USA for more than six months.....

OHIP allows departures of upto seven months withoiut loss of benefits.

As zooch pointed out though, the entry to US is limited to 183 days, and requires maintenance of a home in Canada available at all times while in US.

CPP/OAS will be paid anywhere
