How can I go to a US college?

Post Wed Jul 06, 2011 1:24 pm

I am Canadian, and I know I need to get a student visa in order to study in the US. However, I want to be able to work, either in an internship or just a part time job that will allow me to pay for my living expenses, while I am in the US. Does the student visa allow this? Is there another type of visa I could apply for to do this? I am just graduating high school, so don't have much work experience. Do I just have to save up money while in Canada and just rely on that in the US? I am also a singer/songwriter, so if I did end up getting a paying gig at somepoint in the US, I would like to be able to take it. The college course I am currently looking at is only 9 months long, does this affect the type of visa I need? Any advice would be great, I am completely lost in this whole immigration thing.

You would be studying under F1, and would be allowed ON-CAMPUS employment of 20 hours/week. That is all. You would be expected to furnish proof before getting visa that you have the finances to pay for your school and expenses, and be expected to return to canada at the end of the school year (where you can legally work).

so, no gigs allowed.

You would not beallowed any other type of visa.

Unless you are going on scholarshiop or have rich parents, I'm guesing you will have to go to school in Canada, and then perhaps your can get F1 for grad school.
