How do I apply for dual citizenship in Ireland?

Post Fri Jul 20, 2007 12:39 pm

Hello everyone. I am new to all this, so please bear with me. I am a Canadian citizen born in 1983. My grandmother was born in Cork, Ireland and my grandfather was born in Glasgow, Scotland. I first want to know if I am eligible for dual (or multiple)citizenship in those countries and how exactly I would go about applying. I have typed into Google everything I can think of to render an application, but I just can't find anything.

I don't believe you are eligible. You have to be direct decent from either a father or mother born in either of those countries, to my understanding.

If you are, however, I would suggest gaining dual instead of multiple citizenships. Things can get crazy and expensive after 2.

here is some info on Irish citizenship http://www.irelandnow.com/citizenship.html

And if you have a search around here you'll find lots of info on UK citizenship.

However as wwwaterloo mentioned, unless it is your parents that were born in the UK/Ireland you're likely not eligible. You would be eligible maybe for an Anscestry Visa to the UK though, if you can get hold of your Glasgow grandparent's birth certificate. I don't know if Ireland has a similar visa though.
