How do I get an NI number?

Post Thu Aug 07, 2008 7:02 pm

I'm a Canadian student studying in London and I'm interested in working while I'm in the UK. Do you any of you know the easiest way to go about this? I hear the whole process from start to finish can take up to 6 weeks?

Responsibility for issuing an NI number rests with the Department of Works and Pensions (DWP). To apply for an NI number you should telephone 0845 600 0643 between 8.00am and 6.00pm UK time, Monday to Friday.

I am a UK chartered accountant and Canadian CGA practicing in the UK. I can file your UK and Canadian tax returns. Reasonable fees. See my website at lynch.pro

You can get info about NI numbers at any Jobcenter plus, they set up an appoointment for you to go in and apply. They just ask about your visa, if you already have a job where you are living etc. I think the interview took me about 15 min, than i got a number in a week or so, this also intitles you to their basic health care (NHS)

Hey,

I've got a question.... do you need to have an NI to get a job? I have the Youth Mobility Scheme VISA

I'm sort of avoiding council tax, so I don't want my address to show up anywhere needlessly.

Hi All,
I worked in the UK back in 2002 on a working holiday visa and was issued an NI. If I return to the UK to work on a UK Ancestry Visa, will this NI still be valid or do I have to apply for another?
Thanks!

You don't need NI to get a job, however avoiding council tax will get you deported if you get caught. An employer will require your address and contact info to put you on their payroll. If you don't have NI or pay stubs, you might be asked to pay for any health services you receive, even though any working tax-payer is entitled to free health care via the NHS. If you can't prove you're entitled to it, they will charge you.
Keep reinventing yourself.
