Amex method is by far the EASIEST method in establishing American credit rating.

depends which Mastercard. I had a MBNA Canada mastercard and was able to get a MBNA America card when I moved here. I called them and filled out their application and included a copy of my Canada statement, they checked my credit in Canada and sent me a US card.

And they keep raising my limit! My credit rating is now better than my husband's, who has lived here in the US all his life (except for a few years of military service).

I had the same problem with receiving a US credit card. Capital One did eventually give me a "Platinum" MasterCard.with a $300 limit. I've been putting alot of small charges on this card and paying them off within a couple of days. I have since had the limit on this card raised to $500 and received a second Platinum MC from Capital One with a $500 limit. I like the idea in a previous post about having Amex issue a US card if you already hold a Canadian Amex card. Anyway, good luck.

By the way, the Bank of America credit card which i got without any hassles gave me a $6000 credit limit. Once again, they did not check my Canadian credit and i had only been in the US for 2-3 months. I also was not making a significantly large salary.

Payroll deposit may help. We have an account at Wells Fargo with direct pay deposit and they gave us a Platinum Visa with a high limit a couple of weeks after we moved.

Here are several options that may be helpful:
1. Bank of America has ties with CIBC in Canada and can check your Canadian credit. Open a Bank of America account and apply for a credit card with your Personal Banker. Also, if you have your paycheck directly deposited into the bank account they are more likely to approve you.

2. If you had an American Express credit card in Canada, contact Amex and request for an american American Express card.

Hope that helps

This thread may be a little stale, but I'd thought I'd relate my success with this issue:

Recently moved to the US on a TN. Like most here, good credit in Canada but non-existent in the US. Rejected out of hand for any unsecured credit card.

I've been a TD customer in Canada for years -- they have an affiliate bank (tdbank.com) in the US. I applied for a credit card with them, was rejected with a letter. Used the callback number, and managed to explain my situation with the credit officer. Suggested she check my Canadian credit score (TransUnion.ca etc.). After a few minutes, she asked for my TD bank account, SIN etc. Was approved within a week!

As someone else suggested, try applying with a bank that has connections with your in Canada (CIBC - Bank of America). You might have better luck this way, especially if you've been a customer of the Canadian bank for some time.

obviously this was years ago.

I've been in the US for 7 months now. For the first 6 I used my canadian denominated card and paid insane fees.

But then i changed jobs, moved back to canada, go ta new TN and applied for US dollar visa with TD bank in canada.

I also tried to get a capital one and a TD credit card in the US. No cigar.

Tired of this BS. I have a fabulous score with experian, transunion, and equifax. Unfortunately it doesn't translate to jack s...t here.
So I have to use my USD card from canada, make cheques out to my td canadatrust borderless USD bank account, mail them and then pay off my US visa. PITA

You need to TALK to someone at the bank you do business at in US. they can override your no credit history problem. If they can't, find a bank that does. Continuing to use Cdn credit card is pointless in this regard.

Also, Capital one has a specific card for no credit history folk like you that has been reported here.

http://www.capitalone.com/creditcards/n ... _CP17917AW

if you applied for this one and did not get it, then there must be a problem.
