After about 3 months on a TN I got a credit card with Bank of America. I did nothing special, just applied. It also had nothing to do with my Canadian credit.

You can also get a secured credit card with a low limit from your bank (we got one at Bank of America the first couple weeks we lived in the US), there will be a fee, and you will have to pay a deposit to secure it (I know.), BUT, after a few months of paying that off every month you will be in a MUCH better position. This may be simpler than going the Equifax route, although they may have updated their processes in the past year or so since I attempted.

The RBC idea is quality too.

Contact RBC Centura. They use Canadian credit history

Amex method is by far the EASIEST method in establishing American credit rating.

depends which Mastercard. I had a MBNA Canada mastercard and was able to get a MBNA America card when I moved here. I called them and filled out their application and included a copy of my Canada statement, they checked my credit in Canada and sent me a US card.

And they keep raising my limit! My credit rating is now better than my husband's, who has lived here in the US all his life (except for a few years of military service).

I had the same problem with receiving a US credit card. Capital One did eventually give me a "Platinum" MasterCard.with a $300 limit. I've been putting alot of small charges on this card and paying them off within a couple of days. I have since had the limit on this card raised to $500 and received a second Platinum MC from Capital One with a $500 limit. I like the idea in a previous post about having Amex issue a US card if you already hold a Canadian Amex card. Anyway, good luck.

By the way, the Bank of America credit card which i got without any hassles gave me a $6000 credit limit. Once again, they did not check my Canadian credit and i had only been in the US for 2-3 months. I also was not making a significantly large salary.

Payroll deposit may help. We have an account at Wells Fargo with direct pay deposit and they gave us a Platinum Visa with a high limit a couple of weeks after we moved.
