How do you pay taxes??

Post Tue Jan 18, 2005 2:28 pm

Hello everyone!

Boy am I glad to have found this website!! I've *just* received my working holiday visa..

I don't know about taxes.. Do I continue to pay canadian taxes on my wages whilst over in London?? Will I have to pay taxes on my earnings when I get back?

Thanks!

Nataly :)

To your first question: I don't think so. (if I'm wrong someone will set us straight.)
To your second question: It depends on whether the Canadian government considers you to be a resident of Canada while you're away. If yes, then yes...if no, then no.

here's the page on the CRC website for Canadians living abroad, I'm sure there's info in there about what you should do

Not sure if others gave you all the info you need but as someone said - unless you can make a case (supported by serious evidence, ie. no longer have a Cdn driving license, have no immediate family, etc) for not having residency ties, the Canadian govt will come looking for the difference in the taxation of what you would pay in Canada (which is a higher % than in the UK on teh same Cdn$) and what you are paying the UK govt. Definitely a drag but I understand from my tax accountant in Canada that you generally would need to be out of Canada a min of 2 years, possibly longer, before they'd accept the case that you don't have permanent ties. Having a house or other things back there makes it more complex.

Good luck.
