You're allowed to stay for six months but it's not automatic. Entry into the US is at the discretion of the CBP officer. Among other things, when they question you, they're looking to see if you plan on overstaying or working illegally. If you are not working or in school, that raises red flags for them because they think you are going to try to find a job in the US. Also, two months is a long time to stay in one place so unless you have family or you have bought a vacation house there, they might be thinking that you're planning to move there. Basically, if your story seems shady to them, they can (and often do, as in your case) deny entry. It sucks but it's true.
