How long do Canadians have to wait to move to the States?

Post Mon Nov 07, 2011 8:42 pm

Hi,

I am currently trying to move back to the States to live with my dad, brother and sister (I've also fallen in love with a girl who lives in the states - and this is another reason why I want to move back there so desperately and in a timely manner). My dad is a permanent resident of the U.S. and is petitioning on my behalf so that I can move back there to live with them again. I'm over the age of 21 and am unmarried so I believe I fit under the F2 category under B? I'm not sure on that.

I've been worrying myself sick, though, with how long it's going to take. I keep hearing/reading stories about how some people have to wait up to 5-6 years before they're able to get their appointment for their visa interview. I was hoping that, since I'm in Canada and it's a PARENT of mine that is a permanent resident in the States, it'll only take a year, maybe 2 tops?

Can anyone help me out? I'm worried sick that it's going to take years and I hate waiting to find out for sure. Any help would be much appreciated.

You are better off going the marriage route. This way it will take less than a year for you to gain PR since your girlfriend is a citizen.

If your dad only has a GC you are right. It will take years before anything gets approved. It is usually 8-10 years. See visajourney.com for details regarding marriage to a US citizen...

F2B is currently about 8-9 years, so that is NOT going to be your most successful method of moving to US.

Even if your parent were to become citizen, it would shave maybe a year off the waiting time.

You need to go to school and get a degree and then find a professional job in US, or you need to marry a US citizen.
