how long do they hold Can. passport?

I would like to apply for British
citizenship (.my mother is British.)
However, I use my canadian passport
frequently for business, and can't
afford to surrender it during the
application process for more than
2-3 weeks. Is it possible to get it
back early, or send copies if stamped
by the UK consulate or a lawyer?
