How to get teaching job?

Post Sat Apr 01, 2006 6:10 pm

Hi, I am an experienced Canadian teacher...Middle School: Language Arts, Math and Science. I am interested in teaching in the Middle East. Can anyone tell me how much the pay would be and what are the steps in getting employment.

Thank you,
BMacG

To find jobs teaching in the Middle East you can check out www.eslcafe.com or www.tefl.com or www.eslbase.com as well as some other sites. Just do a google search and it will lead you in the right direction.

Hi BMacG,
My wife and i taught for a couple of years in Dubai. We are now heading to the Dominican for a couple of years. If I were you I would NOT go to teach ESL. If you are an experienced teacher, there are jobs at international schools that would be far better suited to your skill set. Get in touch with Ray Sparks (Canadian Rep.) from Search Associates or go to the Toronto or Iowa job fairs. There are some really great overseas jobs that pay for airfare, housing and medical as well as contribute towards pension opportunities. My wife and I have used Search twice and been very pleased with their services. It does cost about $200, but that is a small price to pay when it gives you contact with reputable schools in many different areas of the world. With their fees, you get access to their database of schools and job postings as well as admissions to one of their job fairs. The international schools use these recruiters almost exclusively. So, unless you know someone overseas, it is really difficult to get the same contacts. There is another Job fair in Boston in February (My wife and I went to the Boston Search Ass. fair) called ISS. Anyway, there are three or four different recruitment companies that get job postings from overseas. Here are a few links to follow.

Lastly, there are a lot of choices out there that are not teaching ESL. In BC, the ESL jobs do not count as teaching experience if you return. Best of luck.
Cheers,
Cbenn
