hows UK immigration deals with request to stay 4 1/2 months

Post Sat May 07, 2011 5:58 am

I am curious about the response by the UK immigration, when a Canadian wishes to enter, and remain (in the UK) for a period of 4 1/2 months, i know by law Canadians can get 6 months (for purpose of touristic visit), and with a bank statement (showing proof of money), and an onward ticket, usually there is a not a problem, but is there something else I should know?

I am entering at Exeter, from Dublin (by air), and leaving the UK 4 1/2 months later, from Edinburgh (by air).

The purpose of the visit is an extensive tour of England, Wales, and Scotland (slowly moving across the land).

If you are a Canadian, or another national, and did such a LONG trip, in the UK, i would appreciate your experience. Or if you just understand UK immigration (for tourists).

Thank you.

If your intention is to visit Ireland and the UK and have enough funds to stay for 4 1/2 months, you should be able to enter the UK without any problems.

Immigration officers may ask to see your return ticket, latest bank statements and ask you questions regarding your itinerary. If you already booked your hotels, it could also help to bring the proof with you.

I'm Canadian, and I came to the UK for a four-month holiday a few years ago. I was worried about what customs/immigration would say, too, so prepared by bringing my bank statement proving I had enough money (a few thousand), and also had proof of return flight ticket booked. I didn't have specific addresses of where I was going to be staying, but planned (as you have) to move around the UK at my own pace and explore.

I had no problems at all with customs/immigration. I showed them my bank statement, return flight ticket, and also a rough list of the direction I planned to travel in (I don't think that was even necessary). They were very happy with all of this and didn't ask any further questions. I asked them if I would have any complications if I decided during the four months to travel in and out of the UK (perhaps to the Continent) for brief periods, they advised me this also would be no problem as long as I kept the bank statement and return ticket to show them upon re-entry.

Long story short - you won't have any problem as long as you bring the two pieces of information noted above.

My girlfriend was stopped at Heathrow without a return ticket and made to purchase one then and there or get on a flight back. Eventually she bought a cheap Easyjet flight to Spain for a random date which seemed to satisfy them. It's ridiculous as she wasn't warned when boarding the plane in Vancouver. They asked to see a bank statement as well but eventually they settled for the fact that she had a credit card. Make sure you have all your documentation in place before heading off or you could end up with a shock!

the first question anyone would ask is why she as a Canadian visiting the UK purchased only the one-way ticket - what was her intention doing this?

Was it her intention 'to stay for as long as she thought she could, maybe beyond the 6-months', or was it simply a 'I dont know when I'm returning back to canada'?

Put yourself in the border control agents shoes at Heathrow, I would be very suspicious - rightfully so.

I dont think (but maybe I'm wrong) the person at Vancouver that sold her the ticket or the boarding agent should be asking 'why did you purchase a one-way ticket'

As far as anyone would know, maybe your friend already had another one-way return ticket back home (different airline) , or a ticket for an onward journey to some other place

If a European citizen entered Canada on a one-way ticket, the same would apply ... very suspicious.

The United Kingdom immigration law is broadly categorized into two parts and are granted to individuals who have the right of abode in Britain and those who need permission to remain or to enter UK.

You may have heard rumors that the Baltic’s are the next hot destination on European cruises. And it’s true! So true, in fact, that spring and summer sailings feature sky-rocketing prices few of us can afford. But we sifted through the current specials to this Northern European region and found a threesome of bargains you simply can’t skip

I agree with poitaco I would be very suspicious of anyone coming into my country for
a holiday with only a one way ticket. I go on vacations every year and have never
purchased a one way ticket.
