Dutch citizenship

Hi,

I was wondering if you can tell me how you found out that information. Both my parents are Canadian citizens and moved to Canada before the age of 21. I am now living in Germany and I am about to start the process for immigration, so If I can get a work permit the same way you did that would be great.

thank you

Hi Sherrie,

Try contacting the German consulate:

German Consualte Toronto http://www.germanconsulatetoronto.ca/en/home/

See if they have a similar policy to Holland, that you can get your citizenship through your folks.

Good luck!

Mark~ I just contacted the Dutch consulate and asked them. Thye can tell you if you are eligible and you go from there. It took me a few months to gather all I needed (I only offcially was granted citizenship last week and am now applying for a passport).

If you have specific questions, I can try and answer them.

Good luck!

Dutch Citizenship for Canadians

Post Sun Aug 22, 2004 11:40 am

Hi:

I saw that you got citizenship because your Dad was under 21 at the time he became a Dutch citizen - does that apply for my Mom as well? My mother was under 21 but my father was not?????

Hiya Jolley and Jack,

I could not tell you for sure that it only applies to fathers, but that was y impression as both of my parents were under 21, but they only talked about my dad. However, the questionaire they gave me asked not only about parents, but grandparents, so maybe that is a possibility as well.

Contact the Dutch Consulate and see what they say. Good luck!

Hi there oohmercyme.
:D
I jsut found out I can become a Dutch citizen as my father became a Canadian citizen under the age of 21 and he is therefore still considered a Dutch citizen.
I'm curious about this because a friend of mine may be in a similar position; her father immigrated to Canada in his teens from the Netherlands.

The PDF file called 'How can you regain your Dutch nationality? Option and naturalisation procedures for former Dutch nationals’ available at

http://www.minbuza.nl/dutchnationality

claims the following:

"In general, a Dutch national will lose Dutch nationality if he or she is also a national of another country and, as an adult, has resided for a continuous period of ten years outside the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles or Aruba and outside the EU."

This doesn't say anything about not losing your citizenship when you emigrate as a minor (i.e. under 21). I'm just wondering if your father's case is covered by the above paragraph somehow, or if there's some other special case that allows a person to retain his Dutch citizenship which isn't mentioned and which I don't know about.

We'll probably have to contact the Dutch Consulate in Toronto as you suggest, but right now I was wondering if you could shed any light on the situation.

I found very little useful information on the Consulate website. From contacting them directly, I found out this vital tidbit of info that enabled me to get citizenship.

I suggest you contact them directly. The Toronto Consualte was very helpful.

Good luck!
