I have a job offer in US but bf works for Cdn company

Post Fri Jul 22, 2011 1:01 pm

Hi!

I'm debating about a job offer (for 2 years) with a US company I previously did an internship with while in school. My job will take me to Texas. My bf works for a Cdn company that has multiple offices in the states, including one in Texas. Is it possible for my bf to keep his current position and come with me to Texas? Or what is the best/legal way for him to come to Texas and stay at his current job? I believe I will be coming on a TN visa (as either an engineer or management consultant). Our intentions are for me/us to be there for 2 years max and return to Canada.

I have read on the forum that "telecommuting" is not an option for him even if his work permitted him to work remotely...without the proper visa.

Will he qualify to enter the US on a B1 or L1 visa if his work could arrange for him to be transferred to Texas office or if they send him there for meetings/short term project work? If such was possible, how long can he stay in the US for (maximum time permitted and/or per calendar year)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Without getting a work status, he could really only visit you, and not work. He could get a transfer to a US office (This would be an L1 status) pretty easily.
