I'm a Canadian citizen living in the states

Post Fri Dec 14, 2007 2:35 am

I've been living in the states since 1970. And now they say I'm illegal! My father has since passed and now I'm trying to get perm resident status. The main problem is I don't qualify for any medical help here from the US gov. I'm in need of a double hip replacement and I'm only 41 so nobody here in this damn country will help. Can I get help from Canada Med? Plz help! The pain is more than I can bear! Thanks A Canuck stuck in the US!

Are you being deported? Why do they say you're illegal? Did your parents bring you here as a child illegally and you just decided to stay thru adulthood?

Canada is not likely to help you while you're here in the US, too expensive. If you go back to Canada, they may or may not re-instate your provincial healthcare and may or may not pay for hip replacement. You'd have to contact them to find out. And then you'd have to move to Canada.

NO! My parents brought my sister and I here legally in 1970 since I was brought here before 1972 I'm OK in that respect. I have the law school here at UNLV helping me get my perm resident card. When I went to INS they said I had no status that I'm illegal as of right now. I do have a Social Security card and have had it since 1977. I'm letting the University handle my resident issue. PS (If your having problems with your resident status in the US go to your local University law clinic they may take your case PRO BONO! like they did mine!) My main issue is my hips, I was curious if I was still covered under OHIP that I did pay into in 1986 when I briefly lived and worked in TO in 1986. Any ideas? Canadian stuck in the States, I miss my Malt bread!

Nope, if you leave Canada and take up residence in another country, you legally lose your access to Canadian healthcare. The only way you could get it back is to move back to Canada and reapply.
