Hi all. I have a few questions.

I'm currently a student at the University of Toronto studying Management and Political Science. I want to relocate to the UK as soon as I graduate. Some questions:

1.) How much CDN money do you think should be kept in reserve when you first relocate? Did you folks stay in hotels/hostels when you looked for jobs to save money?

2.) What are the odds I can find a liveable job with the degree mentioned thereabove.

3.) I should try to get a job before I move over there, shouldn't I?

4.) Any other tips?

To start with, read through all the other postings about people moving here, some of the responses will help you out a great deal.

1) The more money you bring with you, the less stressful you will find living here. If you plan your rent being around £300 a month (get a roommate to begin with, they help with adapting to life in the UK). A good rule of thumb is to allow the same number of pounds as it costs you dollars in Canada.

I stayed with a teacher at the school I was placed at. You will need a proper address when you're job hunting. Stay in the hostel to get your bearings until you get a roommate.

2. I have no idea about your job prospects. You may want to contact the job agencies and see what sort of feedback they can you. You will probably need to get your degrees assessed by UKNARIC. There is a fee for this, but at least you find out how your degree compares to those granted in the UK.

3. Yes. You should try to get a job before venturing over, even if it's not in your field.

What sort of visa will you be getting?

4.) Any other tips?

I also did polisci at UofT.

I'm not sure about management, but there's ABSOLUTE ZERO chance you'll get a job here while you're still back in Canada from a polisci degree. Basically only trades or "professional" disciplines (teachers, doctors, nurses, social workers, etc) get you a job here while you're still in Canada.

I busted my arse from mid-June through mid-August trying to find a job with a local council government, one in which I could put my degree and knowledge to use. My error was trying to get a job here during the summer - it just doesn't happen. The place is awash with students looking for jobs. Now that students are slowly heading back toward school, I've received heaps of offers. So, September and Jan/Feb are good times to come here on an arts degree. Summer is not.
