If it is like anywhere else in the EU, you have to be out of the country for 6 months to go back again on a travel visa(to stay for 6 months). Hence why I'm going to the France, Italy, Greece after UK, then I'm doing a 4 month trek through South America. If I can time it right. :)

Good luck on getting the visa sorted, although I have to say I am in in the opposite frame of mind. I have been in the UK since 2000, and my wife (born and bred in the UK) and I are almost certain to move back to Canada.

I really can't imagine who would want to live in today's (and the probable future) UK. it has gotten so madly right wing over the past few years it is sad.

I mean this latest nonsense with the ex-foreign secretary saying Muslim women should take off their veils. oy vey!

In 2000, the BNP were a bunch of right wing loons. now people seem to be echoing their divisive rhetoric.

I hope it changes, but to be honest, I don't know if I want to stick around to see.

But hey, good luck!

Moving to England

Post Sat Oct 14, 2006 6:52 pm

Hi Scootter, I totally understand where you are coming from too. Certainly, I realise that there are certain things in Canada that are a lot better than England. I think both countries have their good and bad points as is the case when you compare any two things. In my experience, England is more racist as a whole so while I am shocked at what you said about Muslim women being 'forced' to remove their veils, I can't say I am surprised.

I think for me, at this point in my life, I will be happier in England. I guess it all depends on what stage of life we are in and what we are looking for. To be honest with you, when I first moved to England, it took me a long time to adjust. It was a HUGE culture shock. And I desperately wanted to come home. But as the time grew nearer for me to come home, I realised I didn't want to anymore. And I am back now and still am miserable. Good luck with your move if you decide to go for it.

Yeah, I find this country to be racist as well and am sick of people treating us poorly when they think we're "American" and then changing their tune when they find out we're Canadian.sheesh. Plus my two oldest boys get harassed still about their "foreign" accents.get over it, wankers!

In other news.we ARE going home! DH's company came through with an offer and a full relocation package on Tuesday and we decided to "go for it" despite the nightmare logistics of selling a house and moving four children thousands of miles to a part of the country I'm not familiar with, EEK! Now we are rushing around to finish off the jobs in the house that have been left undone for 2 years so we can list it, trying to find an area in the GTA to live in with good schools for our kids (our oldest has special needs), and all the rest of the stress involved in moving. My head hurts! We left Canada in January 2000 and have enjoyed our "European experience" but it is time to go home.

Good luck with your visa Nadia and hope you can come back since it's what you want!

I hope y'all haven't been away from home so long that you forgot we breed our own special brand of idiots at home.

When I lived in the states, I was often treated poorly because I was Canadian and made fun of because of my accent.

Of course, when I lived in Canada, I blended in, not an issue for me, but it surely was for a lot of the "foreigners".

The great thing about idiots is- they are everywhere!

Nadia- good luck! I hope your visa comes through!

Murtle- I got Dutch citizenship through my parents. It may go back to grandparents, however, it seems to only a paternal thing (as in your father or grandfather). Contact the Dutch COnsulate in Toronto and they will send a checklist and assess if you are eligible- I found them very helpful  http://www.dutchconsulate.toronto.on.ca/
