i want to work abroad

Post Mon Jul 30, 2007 1:08 pm

hi everyone,

i just came back to canada (6 months ago) after living/travelling asia for 2 years. i absolutely loved it! i am very interested in re-locating & working there.

everything i find about working abroad tho seems to be teaching english. i think i could enjoy doing this however i don't have the bach degree (just 3 years of tech college) it seems so many countries require to teach english legally.

any ideas out there what avenues are available to peeps that would like to find work in asia, legally that is. i'm not looking to get in trouble/deported working illegally.

i'm not expecting to make loads & loads of money. it would be more about just living life at a different pace & paying my way with a job.

any ideas or advice would be great.

tt

btw: i am very open to working/re-locating almost anywhere in asia. i've already been to several countries & i would like to return to or continue adding to that list.

Many people seem to have luck obtaining ESL certification (english as a second language). As I understand, this isn't a proper 4 year degree or anything, but it can be obtained in a few months from home study. I have not done this, but I am considering obtaining the certification to fund my travels.

I agree that Asia is a great place to live and work.
Are you interested in teaching only, or in joining an international organization, which could provide employment in Asia, and a decent salary?

i have looked into this thoroughly & was seriously considering taking the plunge with TEFL or perhaps commit even more & going with CERTA. but it is pretty apparent that in order to get a work permit to teach in most countries i looked at (asia specifically) a bachelors degree is a must! it doesn't have to be a bachelors degree of ed, but apparently any bachelors degree, which i don't have. i only went to college for 3 years.

i was looking at the possibility of teaching as it seems there are lot of job opportunities for native english speakers, in & around asia. it would actually be a nice change of pace from the hectic crazy schedule i have had for the past 12 years working in the telecom industry.

however i would certainly take the opportunity of doing contract work in the telecom industry (doing what i do. installing & testing) in & around asia. however i don't really know where to look to see if that is even an option or if my skillsets would even be desirable in asian countries that have local people that can do the same work.

it is kind of why i originally posted though, hoping if there were offshore contracting resources for that kind of work that someone knew of hopefully they would post.

and a decent salary

money is not the big concern for me. if i could work to pay my way & have some extra dosh to spend on days i wasn't working, i would be satisfied. mind you i wouldn't turn down more money if it was offered.

cheers,
tt

edited for spelling (i hope i got them ALL :>)

Teaching in Thailand

Post Tue Aug 07, 2007 8:54 pm

Hey Thaitang,
you should consider Thailand. I have been teaching here for over a year with only a TEFL certificate, and it's perfectly legal. The only difference is that you probably not be hired in a major centre or well-known language school. They require more of an educational background. However, if you would consider moving to a smaller village and working for less money, there are teaching opportunities.

everything i have read is that schools in thailand will require a bachelor degree along with a TEFL/CERTA to teach.

However, if you would consider moving to a smaller village and working for less money, there are teaching opportunities.

i almost certainly expected to teach in a smaller village to start, but understood that to get a working visa teaching in thailand i would require a bachelor degree to obtain such a job. are you telling me i could legally obtain a working visa to teach in the LOS with JUST a TEFL or CERTA without a bachelors? i would certainly jump aboard!

cheers, this is why i originally posted. hoping for some real experience/input.

I can not gaurantee anything, but I know lots of schools that don't require the bachelor's degree. The problem is with immigration. If you get an easy-going offical than yes you'll get the visa, otherwise technically no.
I'm not condoning breaking the rules, but the rules seem a little unfair anyway. Someone with a degree in Physical education is allowed to teach English with no teaching qualifications, yet those with teaching certificates and no degree are not!?!
Make everything look as official as possible (teaching certificates - I took University transcripts of the 3 years I have completed) and try your luck, nothing is for sure.
