If I am a Canadian living in US where do I go to file my tax

Post Sat Mar 12, 2011 8:19 pm

I can't seem to find the answer I am looking for. If I am a Canadian, on a TN visa in the US, and I worked in both the US and Canada the previous year, so I have tax forms from both countries, can I take forms from both countries to a tax centre in the US? Will I need to mail anything to Canada? Will the US accountant be able to look after it all? Thanks!

We lived half the year in Canada and half the year in the US - had our Canadian accountant do our Canadian taxes and our American one do the US one. After that year, we have only paid taxes here in the US.

I doubt a U.S. Accountant would be familiar with the Canadian Tax System and the Canadian Income Tax Act. You would likely be better off filing yourself and mailing the return to the appropriate Canadian Tax Center.

I suspect your U.S. Accountant would be able to address your U.S. taxation on your behalf by filing a 1040 Resident Alien return.

Hi,

I am a Canadian working on a TN in the US. I am also the sole proprietor of an Ontario corporation which is involved in the same type of business as my TN employer. The income I earn from my TN employer is subject to US taxes, but my employer has done business with my Ontario corporation and would like to the corporation for services rendered (services provided solely by me). How should I treat this income? Should I ask my TN employer to include it in my US W2 income or make a payment to my Ontario corporation. Though I am physically in the US most of the time for my TN employment, I am able to conduct much of the business affairs of my Ontario corporation remotely from the US. What should I do in this circumstance?
