If I move back to Canada how will all my stuff get taxed?

OK, I've been here as a non resident for over five years. I'm renting a home, so no worries there, but what about the car, truck, and RV that we own? How will they get taxed? Also, what about all the household items we have? Will they get taxed, too?

We have no household items worth more than $10,000 CDN, although our Toyota 4Runner, Honda Civic, and Fleetwood tent trailer are all worth more than $10K CDN each. The 4Runner was built in the US, the Civic was built in Japan, but both were built for the North American market. Should I sell these before coming back?

If they are personal items and household goods, there is no tax or duty on them. Not even the vehicles. You'll need to get compliance letters on the vehicles, and probably pay off any loans that are outstanding before you go, and may have to have DRL installed after you get to Canada, but there is no tax or duty on personal goods.

Yeah, it's just paperwork. You need CBSA forms B4 and B4A, and also have a look at www.riv.ca as there is a fair bit of paperwork to import a vehicle. On that website they list the alterations that need to be made to the vehicle (basically you take it to Canadian Tire).

If anyone does tell you that you need to pay any duty or GST, they're either wrong or they're conning you, lot of people seem to get conned going by the posts on here. Tax only comes into play if you'd had the stuff for less than six months, and even then, only if was manufactured outside the NAFTA area.
Steve.
