Immigration to Cali from Montreal (Car Questions)

Post Sun Dec 20, 2009 4:04 pm

I have already set up my TN visa and will be moving in a couple weeks. I want to clairify a couple things. Since it will not be my primary residence do I need a California drivers licence? I plan to lease a car while I am there- will I require anything other then my Canadian credit report etc or will they demand that I have a cali license? Is Statefarm still the best reccomendation for car insurance? Thanks great site!!

While Cali may not be your primary residence, it will be your only residence in US, so you will need cali DL, and cali insurance.

Good luck getting a lease as a brand new resident. Flashing your Cdn credit history will not get you very far, and will simply highlight that fact that you will likely run out on your lease.

Most states require you to obtain a state driver's license within a specified time period, for some it is 3 months but varies according to the locality in question. Your Canadian license can work for a while but eventually you will require a California DL. You may not hold a Canadian and American license simultaneously. Getting credit in the U.S. is a very difficult task now. Banks are reluctant to lend to even good customers in the current enviornment of high corporate and personal bankruptcies.

Noy quite trure. You may not hold 2 state or 2 provincial Dls, but unless the particualar state has an agreement with province to capture DL, you can keep it after getting state DL.

But, regardless, as MC sez, you need a DL where you live, and unless you are a student, most states consider a person living and working in a state as requiring DL from that state.
