When I applied for my SSN, I went to the local office with my passport (TN visa stapled inside), and lease agreement to confirm a U.S. address. At that time, the clerk told me it takes about 10 days after your TN is issued at the border for you to 'appear' in their system, my SSN arrived in the mail quick from that point, though.

For my employer, they had me fill out the tax form and I-9 and attached a copy of my passport ID and visa for their I-9 compliance records.

Once you get your SSN, if you do not have an international driver's license, then you should go get an American one. You'll need your SSN and your passport with the TN stamp. The driver's license will expire on the day of your TN termination, so it's a bit of a pain when comes time to renew any license.
