Importing Canadian Car to California

Post Mon Dec 12, 2011 6:07 pm

Hello! Me and my husband currently are living in Canada, he is a permanent resident and I am a U.S. citizen from California. His I-130 application has been accepted and we are ready to move to California in 2-4 months, we are planning to drive there from Alberta. I am very knew with this and I have been very stressed trying to figure out the car importation process. Any help would be very much appreciated. The car is registered under his dad's name and insurance but we bought it. So what all do we have to do to import the car from Alberta to California or can we keep everything with the Canadian license plate and insurance and just buy a different car in California a few months later? Or maybe if it is easier to put the car into my name since I'm from California? Please help!!! Thank you :)

The first tghing you need is a letter frm the Cdn carmaker stating that your car is importable, by meeting NHTSA standards. Then at the border you will import the car, and when you get to cali, you will have 1 months to get emmissions, registration, driver's license etc

Your Cdn plates, insurance, and DL will lapse once you leave.
