Hey
I am a Canadian Citizen who has been working in the US (California) on a TN visa for the last year and half. While I here I purchased a 2009 Toyota Corolla and financed it through Toyota Financial. Due to a long-term sickness in the family I have decided to head back to Canada. One of the things I need to do is import my car into Canada. To do that I need the title of the vehicle (which Toyota Financial currently possesses). However, I plan to pay off my car this week, and Toyota has told me they will ship me the Title in 3 days.
The title will however contain the lien that I just paid off, however Toyota will also be issuing a letter with the title stating that I have paid it off and will be signing my title or something.
I am then suppose to bring this into the DMV where they would issue a transfer of ownership or something and then take my title. They would issue me a new title in 30-120 days. Given the cash for clunkers deal occurring I am guessing it would be closer to 120 days.
My question is do I need to bring my title to the DMV to export/import it into Canada? Would the title from toyota suffice, along with the letter head. I was hoping to travel back August 21st, and have already arranged for many things on the other end (just missed this detail). Having to delay my travel by 120 days is not an option, so my only other option would be to drive the car to Michigan park it then come back later, but then I might have to pay duty on it.
I essentially have a problem similar to the one posted in 'Problem Importing car to Canada', except I have yet to surrender my title, and I am wondering if I have to. I see no reason as to why I cannot import my car if I have paid it off and have proof, but I know that the border guards don't joke around.
Thanks
