Income tax 2010

If we travel or live abroad, we usually come back to visit right? Here's a the place to meet other "re-pats" and Canadians who have returned.

Income tax 2010

Post Tue Jan 25, 2011 7:22 am

I am Canadian Citizen, living in United States legally since September , 2010 for good. I am married and got finally my Green Card last year.
Do I have to file my income tax for year 2010? I am not working for more than couple years, I have no income. Until September 2010 my permanent residence was still in Canada.
I have sent a letter to CRA with my new address after I moved. Looks nobody noticed because my tax application arrived to the old address in Ottawa.
I haven't closed my Bank account, still keeps my RRSP, my address has been changed in Bank for my new address in USA.
Anybody has any advice???

While you may not have any income for 2010, it is always a good idea to file your departure return with CRA for the year you leave. See the emigrants guide from CRA website. You have certain obligations to report as you leave, not simply income tax.

Jusy make sure you are nol onger collecting GST rebate, CCTB and have told your RRSP that you are a US resident (not simply address change).

For US, You can file a full year joint 1040 return with your spouse, making sure you report any Cdn income you earn, and making sure you report your RRSP on form 8891 and all Cdn accounts on form TD 90-22.1.
