Income tax: Cdn employee working remotely on US Project

Post Mon Dec 07, 2009 3:30 pm

Hello Forum Members,

I'm a Canadian citizen working for a Canadian company as a Management Consultant - I'm a full time employee of this company. My job entails traveling to the US to provide consulting services to various clients. I understand that when I physically work in the US, that the income earned while I'm in the US is subject to US taxes.

My question is: When I work remotely in Canada on a project for a US company, is that income also subject to US taxes?

Any help with this question would be much appreciated.

Merely travelling to US and working there does NOT necessarily mean you are taxed there, unless you spend A LOT of time there, like over 6 months. The tax rules for long-term projects in US are changing with the last treaty. Ask about this at forums.serbinski.com for more details.

My Canadian company offers services to a US company. Can I enter US as a visitor and perform work remotely from my laptop?
